Today we went to the house construction site to get an update and weigh in on some decisions.
First, we got to see a muestra or mock up of the carrizo fence that will go up around our property. This type of fencing is very typical here in our pueblo. Carrizo is a reed type of plant that makes for a beautiful natural fence. I like it so much more than the concrete barricades that are very popular here. Here’s a photo at the top of the post. We love it. We are planning on planting climbing plants on the fencing, so these walls will be very natural, between the carrizo and the bougainvillea and other climbers.
Here’s a photo of the composting toilet with the ceiling now. As we are living in an acute drought right now, I am SO HAPPY we made this pivot to a composting toilet. Here’s a sobering fact to consider. “The average household has about 5 flushes a day. An older toilet uses 7 gallons per flush, a newer one could be as low as 1.6 gallons per flush. If it is 7 gallons that is 12,775 gallons per year on flushes.” For a new toilet that comes to almost 3,000 gallons of water saved! 11356 liters! Plus we get free compost for our garden. A win-win.
The other thing we were deep in discussion about today is our cistern’s location. A cistern is an underground water storage tank that many homes and businesses have here. We have one for potable water, and a separate one for storing the rainwater. In the photo you can see the white chalk markings of the cisterns’ location. I put a red arrow to help you see the chalk markings better.
Victor told us that very soon the ceiling of the first floor is going up, and then the second floor construction will start! I can hardly wait, and of course, you will see photos here of this milestone.
Hoy fuimos al sitio de construcción de la casa para actualizarnos y opinar sobre algunas decisiones.
Primero, pudimos ver una muestra de la barda de carrizo que se colocará alrededor de nuestra propiedad. Este tipo de barda es muy típico aquí en nuestro pueblo. Carrizo es un tipo de planta de caña que forma una hermosa barda natural. Me gusta mucho más que las barricadas de concreto que son muy populares aquí. Aquí hay una foto. Lo amamos. Estamos pensando en plantar plantas trepadoras en la barda, así estos muros quedarán muy naturales, entre el carrizo y las buganvillas y otras trepadoras.
Aquí hay una foto del baño seco con el techo ahora. Como vivimos en una sequía aguda en este momento, estoy MUY FELIZ de haber hecho este giro hacia un baño seco. Aquí hay un hecho aleccionador a considerar. “En un hogar un WC se producen unas cinco descargas al día. Un inodoro más antiguo utiliza 7 galones por descarga, uno más nuevo podría consumir tan solo 1,6 galones por descarga. Si son 7 galones, son 12,775 galones por año con descargas”. ¡Por un inodoro nuevo que supone un ahorro de casi 3000 galones de agua! ¡11356 litros! Además recibimos abono gratis para nuestro jardín. Una situación en la que todos ganan.
La otra cosa sobre la que discutimos profundamente hoy es la ubicación de nuestra cisterna. Una cisterna es un tanque subterráneo de almacenamiento de agua que muchos hogares y negocios tienen aquí. Vamos a tener uno para agua potable y otro aparte para almacenar el agua de lluvia. En la foto se pueden ver las marcas de tiza blanca de la ubicación de las cisternas.
Víctor nos dijo que muy pronto se levantará el techo del primer piso y luego comenzará la construcción del segundo piso. Emocionada y por supuesto, aquí verás fotos de este momento clave en la construcción.
