Composting toilets, water and trees! Baño secos, agua y arboles

 I imagine that many blog readers don’t know much about the water crisis here in Oaxaca (and MANY other parts of the planet).  This acute crisis certainly drove our decision to install a composting toilet.

So here’s a link to an article that talks about the acute challenges that face Oaxaca City and neighboring villages like ours, in the northern Sierra Juarez mountains.  Use Google translate if you don’t read Spanish.

I also include a piece of art I recently saw this weekend at the amazing IAGO museum in the centro about the water crisis, "Oaxaca when the water is gone."

Today we went to visit our friend’s home and get the in depth composting toilet tour.  It will take me a few days to write it up and upload the videos and photos I took.  Even better I learned a lot about the best trees to plant on our land from Carlos, including a gorgeous flowering tree called Wings of a Butterfly (the coolest tree name).  

Me imagino que muchos lectores del blog no saben mucho sobre la crisis del agua aquí en Oaxaca (y MUCHAS otras partes del planeta). Sin duda, esta grave crisis impulsó nuestra decisión de instalar un baño seco.

Hoy fuimos a visitar la casa de nuestros amigos y realizamos un recorrido detallado por los baños secos. Me tomará unos días escribir y subir los videos y fotos que tomé. Aún mejor, aprendí mucho sobre los mejores árboles para plantar en nuestro terreno gracias a Carlos, incluido un hermoso árbol en flor llamado Alas de Mariposa (que nombre de árbol más genial).

Visitas y vistas - Visits and views

 So here’s a short update on what’s happening on the our construction front:

• The staircase to the second floor is now being built.  

• The composting toilet construction is in full process.

• Adobe walls and windows on the first floor are all up.

This past week our friends Aurelia and Paul came for a visit and got to meet Victor and see the house.  Fede and I had no idea that their house in Tehuantepec has a composting toilet, as this is not exactly a topic that we would get into.  How things change!  They have lots of experience with this technology, which is great.

 

This coming week we are going to visit our friends Patrick and Mary to get an in depth tour of their composting toilet, with the gritty details of maintenance.  

Our new neighbors who are building their house are putting up a concrete wall that will block our view of the mountains from our yard.  They are building a large two story concrete house and high concrete walls, which is very much the style here for middle-class/rich people here.  I am sad about losing the view and consoled somewhat that our terrace will still have that view.  We haven’t met these neighbors yet.   

The video captures the view that we are going to lose when that wall gets finished.

Así que aquí hay una breve actualización sobre lo que está sucediendo en la construcción:

• Actualmente se están construyendo las escaleras del segundo piso.

• El baño seco está en pleno proceso.

• Las paredes y ventanas de adobe del primer piso están todas levantadas.

La semana pasada, nuestros amigos Aurelia y Paul vinieron de visita y conocieron a Víctor y vieron la casa. Fede y yo no teníamos idea de que su casa en Tehuantepec tiene baño seco, ya que ese no es exactamente un tema en el que entraríamos. ¡Cómo cambian las cosas! Tienen mucha experiencia con esta tecnología, lo cual es genial.

La próxima semana visitaremos a nuestros amigos Patrick y Mary para realizar un recorrido en profundidad por su baño seco, con los detalles más importantes del mantenimiento.

Nuestros nuevos vecinos que están construyendo su casa están levantando un muro de concreto que bloqueará nuestra vista de las montañas desde nuestro jardín. Están construyendo una casa grande de concreto de dos pisos y paredes altas de concreto, que es el estilo aquí para la gente de clase media y rica. Me entristece perder la vista y me consuela un poco que nuestra terraza aún tenga esa vista. Aún no conocemos a estos vecinos.
