Hammocks from the Isthmus of Tehuantepec - hamacas del istmo

 Our dear friends Paul and Aurelia came for their annual visit from Portland, Oregon, and it was wonderful to catch up on life.  

They brought two beautiful hammocks, made in the Isthmus by prisoners in the local prison, a place where they both worked.  The beautiful Isthmus is a place where people use hammocks as their beds, sofas and chairs, because it is VERY hot.  

We are so excited to get these hammocks hung up, one on the terrace, and another on the porch, and most of all, to USE them!  

My dad loved his hammock so much.  He would love to see our beautiful home, and he would love to use our hammocks.  These hammocks will remind me of him, just like my built in bookcase in my studio will remind me of my mom.

Nuestros queridos amigos Paul y Aurelia vinieron de Portland, Oregón para su visita anual, y fue maravilloso verlos y ponernos al día.

Trajeron dos hermosas hamacas, hechas en el Istmo por presos de la cárcel local, donde ambos trabajaban. El hermoso Istmo es un lugar donde la gente usa hamacas como camas, sofás y sillas, porque hace muchísimo calor.

Estamos muy emocionados de colgar estas hamacas, una en la terraza y otra en el corredor, ¡y sobre todo, de usarlas!

Mi padre amaba mucho su hamaca y creció con hamacas en Puerto Rico. Le encantaría ver nuestra hermosa casa y le encantaría usar nuestras hamacas. Estas hamacas me recordarán a él, al igual que la estantería empotrada de mi estudio me recuerda a mi madre y nuestro amor compartido para libros.

Kitchen cabinet update - noticias de la cocina - muebles y carpintero

 Carpenter Miguel has returned to finish installing the pine kitchen cabinets.  We have drawers!  I have never appreciated having kitchen drawers before, until I lived for months without any.  Here’s a photo of Miguel in front of the beautiful cabinets.  Yay!! 

As I use the kitchen, the one design mistake we made was that the top cabinet shelves and top open shelf are a little too high.  I even have to stretch and reach in some areas, and Federico more so.  We are going to get a stepping stool, but really for a kitchen to be functional and safe for aging in place, I believe in no or minimal stepping stools or ladders.  Just accessible for all, within your grasp.  The same goes for the light bulbs around the house (and there are a lot, because I love light and bright spaces).  They should be easy to change without a crazy high ladder.  In most cases, they are, but there was a very high light hanging in the stairwell that I had moved to be a wall light fixer that was lower/easier to replace.  These seem like small things, but they really aren’t.    

El carpintero Miguel ha vuelto para terminar de instalar los gabinetes de cocina de pino. ¡Ya tenemos cajones! Nunca antes había valorado tanto tener cajones en la cocina, hasta que viví meses sin ellos. Aquí tienen una foto de Miguel delante de los preciosos gabinetes. ¡Qué bien!

Al usar la cocina, me di cuenta de que cometimos un error de diseño: los estantes superiores de los gabinetes y el estante abierto de arriba están un poco demasiado altos. Incluso yo tengo que estirarme para alcanzar algunas cosas, y Federico aún más. Vamos a comprar un taburete, pero la verdad es que, para que una cocina sea funcional y segura para personas mayores, creo que lo ideal es no necesitar taburetes ni escaleras, o usarlos lo mínimo posible. Todo debería estar al alcance de la mano. Lo mismo ocurre con los focos de la casa (y hay muchas, porque me encantan los espacios luminosos). Deberían ser fáciles de cambiar sin necesidad de una escalera alta. En la mayoría de los casos lo son, pero había una lámpara colgante muy alta en la escalera que hice que la cambiaran por una lámpara de pared más baja y fácil de reemplazar. Parecen detalles sin importancia, pero no lo son.
