The gardening begins - el jardineria comienza

Jacky, a gardener from Tierra del Sol, has been working with us for several months putting together a syntropic garden design.  It’s been wonderful to work with her, dreaming about what plants and trees we want to grow, and learning from her deep knowledge of growing a garden with the syntropic principles of mimicking the forest, planting for the long haul.  

We call our garden Jardin Colibri or Hummingbird Garden, because we love hummingbirds, and they remind us of our parents, who come to visit us regularly.  

Here’s a photo of the overall design, as well as the first page of her garden design document.  We will start planting in the fall, which gives us time to source the plants from her comprehensive plant list, and find some extra hands to help us with the initial install.  This is going to be another BIG project.  Maybe not as big as the house build, but one that will take months and years to be fully realized.  

One activity we have checked off is pruning our beautiful guaje tree, something she recommended happen for the health of the tree and the organic material the pruning provides.  This type of garden is all about using whatever the garden provides, as mulch, as compost, as edging for garden beds, etc.  Nothing is ever wasted, just like in the forest.  Polo is a local arborist who propagates plants (including trees) and provides gardening services of all kinds.  He came in an electrical storm to prune the tree, which left me very nervous, but luckily it all turned out fine.

Ha sido maravilloso colaborar con ella, soñando con las plantas y árboles que queremos cultivar y aprendiendo de su profundo conocimiento sobre el cultivo de jardines con principios sintrópicos que imitan el bosque, plantando pensando en el largo plazo.

Llamamos a nuestro jardín Jardín Colibrí, porque nos encantan los colibríes y nos recuerdan a nuestros padres, que nos visitan con frecuencia.

Aquí tienen una foto del diseño general, así como la primera página de su documento de diseño. Empezaremos a plantar en otoño, lo que nos dará tiempo para conseguir las plantas de su completa lista y encontrar ayuda para la instalación inicial. Este será otro gran proyecto. Quizás no tan grande como la construcción de la casa, pero uno que tardará meses e incluso años en completarse.

Una de las actividades que ya hemos realizado es la poda de nuestro hermoso árbol de guaje, algo que ella recomendó para la salud del árbol y el aporte de materia orgánica. Este tipo de jardín se basa en aprovechar todo lo que ofrece: como acolchado, composto, para delimitar las camas de plantas, etc. Nada se desperdicia, como en el bosque. Polo es un arborista local que se dedica a la propagación de plantas (incluidos árboles) y ofrece servicios de jardinería de todo tipo. Vino en medio de una tormenta eléctrica para podar el árbol, lo que me puso muy nerviosa, pero por suerte todo salió bien.

Fireplace - Chimenea kiva

Our beautiful beehive fireplace is now operational.  Here is Victor in front of a test fire.  We are so excited to get to use it in the cold months of November, December and January.  Temperatures drop down to the low 40s in these months.  

Our home lacks central heating and air (as do 99% of all homes here).  Because our home is made with wonderful geothermal adobe, it retains heat when it is cold outside, and stay cool when it is hot outside, so it’s a really nice indoor temp all year long.  We do wear warm clothes and use a heavy blanket at night during those colder months. A cozy fire on a cold winter night will be very welcome....sipping hot Oaxacan chocolate.

Nuestra preciosa chimenea de colmena ya está en funcionamiento. Aquí vemos a Victor frente a una prueba de fuego. Estamos muy emocionados de poder usarla durante los meses fríos de noviembre, diciembre y enero. Las temperaturas bajan hasta los 4-5 grados Celsius en estos meses.

Nuestra casa no tiene calefacción ni aire acondicionado central (como el 99% de las casas aquí). Gracias a que está construida con un maravilloso adobe geotérmico, nuestra casa conserva el calor cuando hace frío afuera y se mantiene fresca cuando hace calor afuera, por lo que la temperatura interior es muy agradable durante todo el año. Aunque una fogata durante una noche frio de invierno va a ser muy bienvenida.

Water wise home - Hogar que cuida el agua

 The composting toilet is now moving forward.  The brick wall sidetracked work for a couple of weeks. 

Our goal is to have an ADA bathroom, so the toilets are higher than the conventional toilet. The bench idea came from a photo my sister Ana sent me.  

A little background on how these work. There are two toilets because you use one for about 6 months, the poop goes into a large container below. You put about a cup of compost and sawdust in after you poop, to help it compost and reduce odors. Then that bin fills up with poop, so you close up that toilet and use the other one. Rotating between them. The final product is excellent compost for the garden. The pee goes into a container, where we empty it into a large container with some charcoal. That is excellent liquid fertilizer for the garden!

We are also capturing rain water off our roof.  These gutters flow into a special rainwater cistern or tank, and they are being installed in the porch area.  The rain water we harvest should last us through the dry season to water our garden.

As we are in the dry season (although it did rain yesterday), it really emphasizes the need for saving precious water.  The valley of Oaxaca is dealing with a water crisis, so we are doing our part.

La construcción del baño seco avanza. La construcción del muro de ladrillos retrasó el trabajo un par de semanas.

Nuestro objetivo es tener un baño accesible para personas con discapacidad, por lo que los inodoros serán más altos que los convencionales. La idea del banco surgió de una foto que me envió mi hermana Ana.

También estamos recolectando agua de lluvia de nuestro techo. Estas canaletas desembocan en una cisterna especial para agua de lluvia, que se está instalando en el corredor. El agua de lluvia que recojamos debería alcanzar para regar nuestro jardín durante la estación seca.

Como estamos en la estación seca (aunque llovió ayer), esto resalta aún más la necesidad de ahorrar este recurso tan preciado. El valle de Oaxaca está lidiando con una crisis hídrica, así que estamos haciendo nuestra parte.

Brick wall - Barda de ladrillo

One of the joys of our home and having a functioning kitchen is that we can welcome friends for meals and visits.  Granted, I am taking it slow, because it is still a construction project.  

Two friends (both women) said we MUST replace the bamboo fence in the back of the property with a high brick or cement wall.  That part of the property faces a field (that was once farmland and now lays fallow).  They explained that a thief could easily cut the fence.  I trust these friends, who have lived in the village for decades.  I think if you tally them up, over 60 years.  So we sat down with Victor, got the price tag (a lot) and did it.  Now there is a very high brick wall with barbed wire.  This  was not the aesthetic we were going for, but we want to be secure in our home.

Here are some photos of the wall and its building.  I had no idea how much work this would take, but like nearly everything about this project, I am learning as we go.

Una de las mayores ventajas de nuestra casa y de tener una cocina funcional es poder recibir a amigos para comer y de visita. Claro que voy despacio, porque todavía es un proyecto de construcción.

Dos amigas (ambas mujeres) nos dijeron que DEBÍAMOS reemplazar la cerca de bambú en la parte trasera de la propiedad por un muro alto de ladrillo o cemento. Esa parte de la propiedad da a una milpa (que antes era tierra de cultivo y ahora está en barbecho). Nos explicaron que un ladrón podría cortar la cerca fácilmente. Confío en estas amigas, que han vivido en el pueblo durante décadas. Creo que, en total, suman más de 60 años. Así que nos sentamos con Víctor, nos dio el presupuesto (que era bastante) y lo hicimos. Ahora hay un muro de ladrillo muy alto con alambre de púas. No era la estética que buscábamos, pero queremos sentirnos seguros en nuestra casa.

Aquí tienen algunas fotos del muro y de su construcción. No tenía ni idea de cuánto trabajo iba a dar, pero como con casi todo en este proyecto, estoy aprendiendo sobre la marcha.
