Barda de contencion - retaining wall goes up

While I am in Tucson with my mom, the construction continues with Federico taking care of the last solicitud, for the the wall around the property. Yay!

Right now Victor and the team are working on the two sides that need retaining walls, as the land slopes on those two sides. Those walls are going up first. Here are some photos, so you can see the digging and depth.

A few folks have asked about how long the project will take. Great question. The plan and the contract says one year, with a caveat that it might take longer. Everyone I have spoken with about building homes in Oaxaca have said things take longer, for a host of reasons. Supply chain, blockades, weather, etc. So that would mean moving into the house around the end of next April.

Our guest room is upstairs (check out an earlier post that has the architectural plan), with a bathroom and a terrace.

Every time I write a post I get excited!




Cuando estoy en Tucson con mi mama, la construcción continúa con Federico manejando la última solicitud, para la barda perimetral. Yay!

Ahora Victor y su equipo están trabajando 2 bardas de contención, porque el terreno no está plano en estos 2 lados. Abajo puedes mirar unas fotos.

Alguna gente nos ha preguntado cuándo termina nuestra casa. Buena pregunta. El plan y contrato dice un año, con la posibilidad de tomar más tiempo. Todos con quien he hablado sobre construcción de casas me han dicho que toma más tiempo, por muchas razones. Bloqueos, clima, cadena de suministro, etc. Entonces significa que nos mudamos a finales de abril de 2024.

Nuestro cuarto para visitantes está en el segundo piso (mira el blog anterior con los planos), con un baño chico y una terraza.

Cada vez que escribo aquí me pongo más emocionada!

Ceremony of the First Stone

 My heart is very full.  So much gratitude for every person, every ancestor, every moment that has gotten us to this place and this moment.  Today we had the ceremony of the first stone, which means that Victor and his team have dug part of the foundation (see earlier photos in the previous post), so that we could truly place the first stone.  

We invited many friends who helped us arrive at this moment, and because of timing not everyone could come (it was on a workday due to traveling on my part and Federico’s).  Patricio and Mari (some of our first friends here), and they introduced us to Victor the architect of our home.  Cris, who Fede met hiking the mountain here, and he and his wife Odilia have been our faithful guides through the process of buying land and living here.  Odilia has been an honest and kind guide in helping me navigate cultural norms that I am learning with humility and sometimes confusion.  You don’t know what you don’t know is my mantra. 

The ceremony was opened by Patrick and Mari (former priest and nun, now married for many decades), who offered us blessings, prayers, and holy water.  Mari created a beautiful altar with the an image of the Virgen de Guadalupe and flowers.  The Virgen is our first housewarming gift.  

Fede had the idea of inviting the local authorities to the ceremony.   To our delight and surprise, they all showed up, over 10 people, native to this pueblo.  They volunteer their time to run this village (that is how pueblos work here, through the volunteer energy and time of native residents).  Each of them shared their thoughts on living here, guidance on being in community and welcomed us warmly.   

Architect Victor and Juana,  his warm and wonderful wife, daughter Diana and Luis made the whole ceremony flow.  Juana and Diana made amazing tostadas with her fresh corn tortillas, and I bought tamales from a neighbor of Patricio and Mari, so after the ceremony we all ate our fill.  Many of our guests shared that this ceremony is no longer common any more, and that they loved being a part of it….

Fede and I wrapped up the afternoon dreaming about the party we will have once we have moved into the house.  It will be on a Sunday, and I think the menu is going to feature lamb.  

This is a dream come true.  Each moment is a gift.  Each person on our path.  These mountains.

Primera piedra

Mi corazón está muy lleno. Tanta gratitud por cada persona, cada ancestro, cada momento que nos ha llevado a este lugar y este momento. Hoy tuvimos la ceremonia de la primera piedra, lo que significa que Víctor y su equipo han cavado parte de los cimientos (ver fotos anteriores en el post anterior), para que realmente pudiéramos colocar la primera piedra.

Invitamos a muchos amigos que nos ayudaron a llegar a este momento, y por cuestiones de horario no pudieron venir todos (era un día laboral por los viajes de mi parte y de Federico). Patricio y Mari son unos de nuestros primeros amigos aquí y nos presentaron a Víctor el arquitecto de nuestra casa. Cris, a quien Fede conoció recorriendo la montaña aquí.  Cris y su esposa Odilia han sido nuestros fieles guías en el proceso de comprar el terreno y vivir aquí. Odilia ha sido una guía honesta y amable al ayudarme a navegar las normas culturales que estoy aprendiendo con humildad y, a veces, con confusión. No sabes lo que no sabes es mi mantra.

La ceremonia abrió por Patrick y Mari (ex sacerdote y monja, ahora casados ​​por muchas décadas), quienes nos ofrecieron bendiciones, oraciones y agua bendita. Mari creó un hermoso altar con la imagen de la Virgen de Guadalupe y flores. La Virgen es nuestro primer regalo para nuestra casa.

Fede tuvo el idea de invitar a las autoridades locales a la ceremonia. Para nuestro deleite y sorpresa, se presentaron todos, más de 10 personas, nativos de este pueblo. Ofrecen su tiempo como voluntarios para administrar este pueblo (así es como funcionan los pueblos aquí, a través de la energía voluntaria y el tiempo de los residentes nativos). Cada uno de ellos compartió sus pensamientos sobre vivir aquí, orientación sobre estar en comunidad y nos dio una cálida bienvenida.

El arquitecto Víctor y Juana, su maravillosa esposa, su hija Diana y hijo Luis hicieron que toda la ceremonia fluyera. Que equipo tan unido y talentoso. Juana y Diana hicieron unas tostadas increíbles con sus tortillas de maíz frescas y yo compré  tamales de un vecino de Patricio y Mari, así que después de la ceremonia todos comimos muy rico. Muchos de nuestros invitados compartieron que esta ceremonia ya no es común y que les encantó ser parte de ella...

Fede y yo terminamos la tarde soñando con la fiesta que haremos una vez que nos mudemos a la casa. Será un domingo, y creo que el menú incluirá cordero.

Este es un sueño hecho realidad. Cada momento es un regalo. Cada persona en nuestro camino. Estas montañas.

The foundation, primera piedra preparation - cimentacion y preparacion para la primera piedra

 A lot has been going on over here in Huayapam!  Heavy machinery removing some trees on the edge of the property that need to go.  They are in bad condition and block the fence that will eventually go up.  Don’t worry, we are SO eager to plant more trees (and lots of other plants!!).  I already have so many photos for garden ideas here.  Also retaining walls are going to be one of the first things to get built.   

Today I stopped by the terreno with Sorpresa, and the foundation is now being dug!  Starting with the area where I will have a studio (for yoga, Zoom calls and living my best life).  

I have also been busy with the primera piedra ceremony, which happens on Monday.  Getting the invitations out, ordering the tamales and agua fresca, etc.   I have never done this before (well that is the story of my life here, where everything is new).

¡Mucho ha estado pasando aquí en Huayapam! Maquinaria pesada quitando algunos árboles en el borde de la propiedad que necesitan irse. Están en mal estado y bloquean la cerca que eventualmente se levantará. No se preocupe, estamos MUY ansiosos por plantar más árboles (¡y muchas otras plantas!). Ya tengo muchas fotos para ideas de jardín aquí. También los muros de retención van a ser una de las primeras cosas que se construyan.

Hoy pasé por el terreno con Sorpresa, ¡y ahora se están cavando los cimientos! Comenzando con el área donde tendré mi estudio (para yoga, llamadas de Zoom y vivir mi mejor vida).

También he estado ocupado con la ceremonia de la primera piedra, que se lleva a cabo el lunes. Mandar invitaciones, pedir tamales y agua fresca, etc. Nunca antes había hecho algo así (bueno, esa es la historia de mi vida aquí, donde todo es nuevo).
