Today Victor, Lorena and I did a walk through with the lighting inventory to nail down the details, such as how long should the hanging light fixtures be hung? There were more changes (including corrections) and tweaking. It’s really cool to see your vision come to life, and I am grateful I get to work with people like Victor and Lorena.
The doors are getting installed, then come the windows (the rainy season has begun, meaning mosquitos).
The tile backsplash in the kitchen was being installed when I arrived by Maestro Felipe and his new assistant.
It’s 9.47 pm, and I have finished updating the lighting inventory. Federico is spending the night at the new house, as there’s currently no worker spending the night there yet.

Today we went to the house to check out a number of things. We also got to say farewell and thank you to Arturo, Jaciel and other workers who are returning to their village. A total of 5 workers are departing, and there are 6 other workers busy getting the house ready for our June move in date (pushed out a month).
The tile floor is getting close to completion. It’s a beautiful terra cotta color with a bit of texture to prevent slipping.
The roof on the second floor guestroom is also finishing up.
The adobe is getting finished, i.e. a rich brown color added and a protective coating.
The wood doors are being installed.
Also look at the beautiful ironwork in the living room/stairway.
I have been preparing a complete inventory of all the lighting throughout the house. It’s taken me a few hours and a couple of walk throughs of the house. Two detailed pages worth! We spent some time measuring the length of the hanging lights today.

Hoy fuimos a la casa a revisar varias cosas con Victor. También pudimos despedirnos y agradecer a Arturo, Jaciel y otros trabajadores que regresan a su pueblo. Un total de 5 trabajadores se van, y hay otros 6 ocupados preparando la casa para nuestra mudanza en junio (que se pospuso un mes).
El piso está casi terminado. Es de un hermoso color terracota con un poco de textura para evitar que se resbale.
El techo de la habitación del segundo piso también está terminando.
Las puertas de madera estan instalando.
El adobe se está terminando, es decir, se le está añadiendo un color marrón intenso y una capa protectora.
También observen la hermosa herrería de la sala/escalera.
He estado preparando un inventario completo de toda la iluminación de la casa. Me ha llevado algunas horas y un par de recorridos por la casa. ¡Dos páginas detalladas! Hoy dedicamos un tiempo a medir la longitud de las lámparas colgantes.
Today we visited the house with Moises, a computer technician who can install our network. It was our second interview, and we liked his solution - a wireless mesh system that doesn’t involve drilling holes nor cables. Each interview we learn more, which is a good thing.
The tile floor install is progressing. Here’s a photo of our bedroom in its current state. You can see the closet design in chalk on that far wall.

A friend introduced me to Lorena, the owner of Casa Vintage Oaxaca, a lovely furniture shop near our home. She’s helping light up our home with beautiful Oaxacan-made lighting fixtures and my desk.

The terrace floor is now done, and it’s lovely red brick. Victor has used a traditional technique for the edges to assist with better water drainage when it rains. It's called chaflan de mezcla. It's been raining these days, so timely.
El suelo de la terraza ya está terminado y es de un precioso ladrillo rojo. Víctor ha utilizado una técnica tradicional para los bordes que facilita el drenaje del agua cuando llueve. Ha estado lloviendo en esos dias, entonces en buena hora.
I think the kitchen is the heart of the home. It is definitely the room where we have put the most energy into its design. I want a kitchen that is functional, easy to clean, and a beautiful combination of rustic Mexican style with modern touches.
It’s not a big kitchen, by US standards. The kitchen is 89 square feet or 8.2 m2. US standards are ridiculously BIG, by the way. Librarian that I am, I did a TON of research into kitchen design, including a deep dive into lighting, because the kitchen doesn’t have any windows. However our kitchen opens into the dining room-living room space, i.e. the open plan concept. Our Portland house had that, and I love it. So there are windows very nearby.
Our kitchen countertops are polished concrete, which was an economical and practical way to go. I love the look. An earlier post has the backsplash.

Creo que la cocina es el corazón del hogar. Sin duda, es donde más energía hemos dedicado a su diseño. Quiero una cocina funcional, fácil de limpiar y con una hermosa combinación de estilo rústico mexicano con toques modernos.
No es una cocina grande para los estándares estadounidenses. Tiene 8.2 m² (89 pies cuadrados). Por cierto, los estándares estadounidenses son exageradamente grandes. Como bibliotecaria que soy, investigué muchísimo sobre diseño de cocinas, incluyendo un análisis profundo de la iluminación, ya que la cocina no tiene ventanas. Sin embargo, nuestra cocina se integra con el comedor-sala, es decir, con el concepto de planta abierta. Nuestra casa en Portland tenía eso, y me encanta. Así que hay ventanas muy cerca.
Los áreas de trabajo de nuestra cocina son de concreto pulido, lo cual fue una opción económica y práctica. Me encanta el aspecto. En una publicación anterior se ve los azulejos contra salpicaduras.

What have I been working on?
Figuring out the internet service situation in an adobe home with the thick walls. Nailed down an Internet provider and someone to install the network with mesh devices throughout the house.
Figuring out some furniture. I found a design for a cool desk that works for standing, sitting in a conventional chair and sitting on the floor. I found a carpenter who will make it.
At the amazing Central de Abastos market downtown, I found a carpenter who stocks the table and chairs that we want for our porch/dining area.
The tile for the backsplash has been selected and purchased.
Key light fixtures selected and ordered.
Stove and fridge bought. Washing machine selected and need to buy.

Estoy solucionando el problema del servicio de internet en una casa de adobe con paredes gruesas. Conseguí un proveedor de internet y a alguien que instalará la red con aparatos de mesh.
Estoy buscando muebles. Encontré un diseño para un escritorio genial que funciona de pie, sentado en una silla convencional y sentado en el suelo. Encontré un carpintero que lo hará. En el increíble mercado Central de Abastos del centro, encontré un carpintero que tiene la mesa y las sillas que queremos para nuestro corredor/comedor.
Ya elegí y compré los azulejos para el salpicadero.
Ya elegí y pedí las lámparas principales.
Compré la estufa y el refrigerador. Seleccioné la lavadora y necesito comprarla.
