Progress in the kitchen - avances en la cocina

 We are in a phase of the project that is less pretty and very important.  This involves pipes and wires. Our plan is to build a small outdoor kitchen, and we are running the connections for water from the cistern and electric.  You can see them going in, and the hook ups will be on the concrete post.  The nice part of this water connection is that if electricity is out, we will still have access to flowing water at this hook up.  Our water flows thanks to an electrically powered hidro.  This is a smart idea that Federico had, and I am here for it.  BTW, we will be installing solar power, but that hasn’t started and is for another future post. 

The front gate area is also getting an electrical hook up for a video camera doorbell that will allow us to buzz in guests, as well as wiring for the car door to open automatically (someday, as we don’t have a car yet, so it’s not a priority).  This is the time to have the wiring prepared and ready. 

The carpenter, after a 6 month hiatus, finally returned to finish the install of the kitchen cabinets.  Here’s a photo of the progress.  I have finally unpacked another box of kitchen items!  I am cautiously hopeful he will return this week (it’s Christmas week, I know) to finish the cabinets.  There will be some shelving installed in the corner cabinet to make the most of this storage area.  Then I can fully unpack and store pots and pans.  

Sorpresa has loved going to the corner cabinet when there’s a lot of fireworks, so she’s going to need to enjoy other quiet spaces in the house…

Estamos en una fase del proyecto menos “bonita,” pero muy importante. Se trata de tuberías y cables. Nuestro plan es construir una pequeña cocina de humo, y estamos instalando las conexiones de agua desde la cisterna y la electricidad. Se pueden ver las tuberías y los cables, y las conexiones estarán en el poste de concreto. Lo bueno de esta conexión de agua es que, si se va la luz, seguiremos teniendo agua corriente en este punto. El agua fluye gracias a una bomba hidráulica eléctrica. Esta es una idea genial que tuvo Federico, y me parece fantástica. Por cierto, instalaremos energía solar, pero eso aún no ha empezado y será tema de otra publicación futura.

En la entrada principal también se está instalando una conexión eléctrica para un videoportero que nos permitirá abrir la puerta a los invitados, así como el cableado para que la puerta del coche se abra automáticamente (algún día, ya que todavía no tenemos coche, así que no es una prioridad). Este es el momento de dejar el cableado preparado.

El carpintero, después de seis meses de ausencia, finalmente regresó para terminar la instalación de los muebles de la cocina. Aquí tienen una foto del progreso. ¡Por fin he desempaquetado otra caja de utensilios de cocina! Tengo la esperanza de que vuelva esta semana (sé que es la semana de Navidad) para terminar los muebles. Se instalarán algunas estanterías en el armario de la esquina para aprovechar al máximo este espacio de almacenamiento. Así podré desempaquetar y guardar todas las ollas y sartenes.

A Sorpresa le encanta esconderse en el armario de la esquina cuando hay muchos fuegos artificiales, así que tendrá que buscar otros lugares tranquilos en la casa…

Fiesta de San Andres - a recap - un resumen

 We live in a village where celebrating a patron saint is a two week experience of novenas (rosaries), fireworks, food, a rodeo, special Masses, parades called calendas and convites, and collective joy.  Children are front and center of everything, and of course, everything is multigenerational.  

Since we now live a 5 minute walk from the main plaza and church, we can easily attend events like these, which often happen in the evening and sometimes very late.  

I attended the tail end of a Mass where the convite participants get a special blessing, then came the convite or a parade of these paper mache figures and dancers, with a live band.  After the convite there is a meal at the house of the mayordomo or sponsor of this year’s fiesta.  Hundreds of people were fed, for free, as part of this fiesta.  The meal was beef tacos, mezcal or cafe de olla.  All delicious.  

With some friends Fede and I went to see the burning of a castillo, a multistory structure of fireworks, followed by a dance (which we didn’t go to, as it was already really late for us).  We didn’t attend the rodeo, maybe we will do this next year.  There’s so many activities!  

It was a huge undertaking, and I am told that the fiesta for Lent is even bigger (which I struggle to envision).  

Vivimos en un pueblo donde la celebración del santo patrón es una experiencia de dos semanas que incluye novenas (rosarios), fuegos artificiales, comida, un rodeo, misas especiales, desfiles llamados calendas y convites, y mucha alegría colectiva. Los niños son protagonistas de todo, y por supuesto, todo es intergeneracional.

Como ahora vivimos a solo 5 minutos a pie de la plaza principal y la iglesia, podemos asistir fácilmente a estos eventos, que suelen celebrarse por la tarde y a veces hasta muy tarde.

Asistí al final de una misa donde los participantes del convite recibieron una bendición especial; luego vino el convite, un desfile de figuras de papel maché y bailarines, acompañados por una banda de música en vivo. Después del convite, hubo una comida en casa del mayordomo o patrocinador de la fiesta de este año. Cientos de personas comieron gratis como parte de la celebración. La comida consistió en tacos de carne, mezcal o café de olla. Todo delicioso.

Con algunos amigos, Fede y yo fuimos a ver la quema de un castillo, una estructura de varios pisos hecha de fuegos artificiales, seguida de un baile (al que no fuimos, ya que era muy tarde para nosotros). No asistimos al rodeo, quizás lo hagamos el año que viene. ¡Hay muchísimas actividades!

Fue una gran celebración, y me han dicho que la fiesta de Cuaresma es aún más grande (algo que me cuesta imaginar).
