Closer and closer - más y más cerca

Each week brings new activities for the house.  We recently went with Victor to visit stores that sell tile, to pick out flooring for the house.  We decided on this tile.

We are going to have brick for the porch.  For those who live in the United States, our porch isn’t quite what you might know or imagine.  It is really an extension of the living space, and where we will eat many meals, take a nap in a hammock, etc.  For the porch flooring, we will have red brick.  I love this design, which I saw in a restaurant in the centro.  

On a totally different note, I wanted to share a highlight of Holy Week for me.  We had a chance to participate in the Stations of the Cross in the pueblo.  It was beautiful, colorful and quite long (3 hours).  What also made this special is that we ran into friends throughout the procession.   It’s the best part of pueblo life….

Cada semana trae nuevas actividades para la casa. Hace poco fuimos con Víctor a visitar tiendas que venden azulejos, para elegir el piso para la casa. Nos decidimos por este azulejo.

Vamos a tener ladrillo para el corredor. Para aquellos que viven en los Estados Unidos, nuestro corredor no es exactamente lo que conocen o imaginan. Realmente es una extensión del espacio habitable, y donde comeremos muchas comidas, tomaremos una siesta en una hamaca, etc. Para el suelo del corredor vamos con ladrillo rojo. Me encanta este diseño, que vi en un restaurante del centro.

En una nota totalmente diferente, quiero compartir un momento de la Semana Santa. Tuvimos la oportunidad de participar en el Vía Crucis en el pueblo. Fue hermoso, colorido y bastante largo (3 horas). Lo que también hizo especial es que nos encontramos con amigos durante toda la procesión. Es la mejor parte de la vida del pueblo….

Second floor takes shape - El segundo piso toma forma

The workers are now placing the adobe and bricks in the second floor rooms.  The second floor consists of a small guest room, adjacent bathroom, an area for the tinaco (a water storage device that allows water to flow into the plumbing), and the terrace.  

I climbed up the ramp (where the interior staircase will be) to take these photos of the guest room, which has adobe walls,  and its bathroom, with brick walls, which are best for rooms where there’s lots of moisture like a bathroom or kitchen.

Yesterday we met with Victor the architect, something we do a few times a month, to check in about various details.  We talked about renewing the building permit with the municipal government, and Victor shared that he thinks the house will be done by July!  It’s incredibly exciting to think about moving into our home, to gardening, nesting and being in the heart of the pueblo (and not its outskirts).  

Los trabajadores ahora están colocando adobe y ladrillos en las habitaciones del segundo piso. El segundo piso consta de una pequeña habitación para invitados, un baño adyacente, un área para el tinaco y la terraza.

Subí por la rampa (donde estará la escalera interior) para tomar estas fotos del cuarto de huéspedes, que tiene paredes de adobe, y su baño, con paredes de ladrillo, que son mejores para habitaciones donde hay mucha humedad como el baño o la cocina. 

Ayer nos reunimos con el arquitecto Víctor, algo que hacemos un par de veces al mes, para platicar de varios detalles. Hablamos sobre renovar el permiso de construcción con el gobierno municipal y Víctor compartió que cree que la casa estará terminada para julio. Es increíblemente emocionante pensar en mudarnos a nuestra casa, crear un jardín, anidar y estar en el corazón del pueblo (y no en una colonia).

Un logro mas - another milestone

 Yesterday was an important milestone for our house, the roof of the first floor was put down!  12 people were involved in this undertaking of laying down concrete, including Federico, who has been helping at the construction site a few days a month.  Federico also ordered chicken soup and aguas frescas for everyone who worked so hard on a Sunday.  Thank you all.  

These photos and videos give you a sense of the work.  How the workers are quickly running up the stair/ramp with the concrete. You can see Victor the architect, who is dressed in a beige outfit. Now the adobe walls of the second floor will go up.

Ayer fue un hito importante para nuestra casa: ¡se bajó el techo del primer piso! En esta tarea participaron 12 personas, entre ellas Federico, que ha estado ayudando en la obra unos días al mes. Federico también pidió sopa de pollo y aguas frescas para todos los que trabajaron tan duro un domingo. Gracias a todos.
