Que esta pasando con la casa esta semana? What's happening with the house this week?

I wanted to share some photos and a video that Federico took this past week at the construction site.  You can see the workers and the house taking shape.  Watch for a cameo of our daughter Elvia and Sorpresa at the very end.  Federico starts from the living room and staircase , then the main bathroom, Federico’s studio and the master bedroom.

Finally I want to share a video in Spanish about ecological bathrooms.  This bathroom is more rustic than ours will be, but the concept is the same.  Two toilets, two spaces below the house where the feces and urine goes and turns into compost.

Quería compartirles algunas fotos y un vídeo que Federico tomó la semana pasada en el sitio de construcción. El video fue narrado por Federico. Se puede ver a los trabajadores y la casa tomando forma. Esté atento al cameo de Elvia y Sorpresa al final. Federico comienza desde la sala y la escalera, luego el baño principal, el estudio de Federico y el dormitorio principal.

Finalmente quiero compartir un video en español sobre baños ecológicos. Este baño es más rústico de lo que será el nuestro, pero el concepto es el mismo. Dos baños, dos espacios debajo de la casa donde las heces y la orina van y se convierten en abono.

Aquí tenéis un corto interesante informe en inglés sobre el agua en Oaxaca. Presenta un poco de perspectiva histórica, así como los desafíos actuales del agua.

Composting toliet and cantera foundation - baño seco y cantera

 This past Saturday Federico sent me these photos of the foundation work that is currently happening.  This is local cantera stone, a beautiful green color.  Soon the adobe walls will go up! Yay!!

The other big news is that we’ve decided to have a composting toilet for our first floor bathroom.   A composting toilet uses no water!   Instead the waste accumulates in a small basement underneath the bathroom, where the waste turns into compost with time.  I have used composting toilets in different places in Oaxaca, and they are very straightforward.  You toss some sawdust after using the bathroom to help with the composting process.  Yes, the toilet paper goes into the toilet and decomposes too.  

Oaxaca (like many parts of the world) has a shortage of water.  With climate change and a growing population this is a particularly bad combination.  I was ambivalent about this type of toilet, but then I realized that the water crisis will only become more acute.   By having this type of toilet our house will be “off the grid,”  we will be collecting rainwater in a cistern for our gardening, washing, etc.  A composting toilet will seal the deal.  Also we will end up with a steady free supply of compost for our garden!  

Here are a couple of articles on composting toilets here and here, and we will be educating visitors to our new home on how to use these toilets appropriately.  FYI the upstairs guest room will have a conventional flush toilet.

Este sábado pasado Federico me envió estas fotos del trabajo de cimentación que se está realizando actualmente. Esta es la piedra de cantera local, un hermoso color verde. Pronto van a levantar los muros de adobe. Yay!

La otra gran noticia es que hemos decidido tener un inodoro de compostaje para el baño del primer piso. ¡Un inodoro de compostaje no utiliza agua! En cambio, los desechos se acumulan en un pequeño sótano debajo del baño, donde con el tiempo se convierten en abono. He usado baños de compostaje en diferentes lugares de Oaxaca y son muy sencillos. Se tira un poco de aserrín después de ir al baño para ayudar con el proceso de compostaje. Sí, el papel higiénico va al baño y también se descompone.

Oaxaca (como muchas partes del mundo) tiene escasez de agua. Con el cambio climático y una población en crecimiento, esta es una mala combinación. Tenía dudas sobre este tipo de inodoro, pero luego me di cuenta de que la crisis del agua sólo se agudizará. Al tener este tipo de sanitario nuestra casa estará “fuera de la red”, estaremos recolectando agua de lluvia en una cisterna para nuestro jardín, lavado, etc. Un baño seco sellará el trato. ¡También terminaremos con un suministro constante y gratuito de abono para nuestro jardín!

Ladrillo, concreto y mas - Brick, concrete and more - y una perra muy bonita

Here is the latest progress on the house, from Federico’s visit on August 23 and also some from August 20.  I am sharing what I can interpret, being 1,600 plus miles away in Tucson.  

The foundation work continues, with concrete being laid.  There are also some brick walls going up in areas where there’s high humidity, like the bathroom and a kitchen wall where the sink will be.

Aquí está el progreso en la casa, de la visita de Federico el 23 de agosto y 20 de agosto.  Estoy compartiendo lo que puedo, a 1600 millas de distancia en Arizona.

El trabajo de la cimentación sigue avanzando, con concreto como base.  También están levantando muros de ladrillo rojo en zonas de la casa donde hay mucha agua, como el baño y la zona del lavabo de la cocina.

Catching up - actualizando

Here are some old photos from my visit to the construction site before I left for Arizona,  Federico took these of me and Victor, the architect.  This is where the first floor bathroom will be. Also here’s a photo of Victor showing us how the foundation stone work will look, roughly.
