Houston we have lift off! Oaxaca, we have a kitchen! ¡Houston, despegamos! ¡Oaxaca, ya tenemos cocina!

 The carpenter came and started to do the built in work around the oven.  The sealer is set, and the BIG refrigerator is now plugged in. It’s a little big for our small kitchen, but it sure is the nicest fridge we have ever owned.  Enjoy the little video tour.  

Let the cooking commence!  Fede and I are more earnestly going through the boxes to unpack our kitchen items.  Because we don’t yet have our cupboards finished, we can’t unpack and store everything, but we are getting a good sense of what we need right now and what can wait.   The dish we are both wanting to cook is a roast chicken with veggies.  

Our first meal in our new kitchen was a pot of black beans, which were grown in Federico’s pueblo.  Like our marriage, it was a collaborative dish.  We each played our part.  He cleaned the beans and put them to cook.  I then went for an evening stroll with Sorpresa in the village to find an onion, garlic, epazote and Serrano chile, then came home and finished up the beans with these ingredients.  We both agree that it’s delicious and very Oaxacan.  Kinda like our life. 

After three months of not cooking and not grocery shopping, this is going to be an adjustment.  A very good adjustment.  I miss going to the markets here.  I am a meal planner and like to think ahead to what I will prepare for the week.  Let’s do this!

El carpintero vino y empezó a hacer los trabajos de instalación alrededor del horno. El sellador está listo y el refrigerador GRANDE ya está enchufado. Es un poco grande para nuestra pequeña cocina, pero sin duda es el refrigerador más bonito que hemos tenido en nuestras vidas.

¡Que empiece la cocina! Fede y yo estamos revisando las cajas con más ahínco para desempacar nuestros utensilios de cocina. Como aún no hemos terminado los muebles, no podemos desempacar y guardar todo, pero nos estamos haciendo una idea de lo que necesitamos ahora mismo y lo que puede esperar. El plato que ambos queremos cocinar es un pollo asado con verduras.

Nuestra primera comida en nuestra nueva cocina fue una olla de frijoles negros, cultivados en el pueblo de Federico. Al igual que nuestro matrimonio, fue un plato colaborativo. Cada uno puso su granito de arena. Él limpió los frijoles y los puso a cocer. Luego fui a dar un paseo nocturno con Sorpresa por el pueblo para buscar cebolla, ajo, epazote y chile serrano. Después, al volver a casa, terminé los frijoles con estos ingredientes. Ambas coincidimos en que están deliciosos y muy oaxaqueños. Un poco como nuestra vida.

Después de tres meses sin cocinar ni comprar, esto va a ser un cambio. Un cambio muy bueno. Extraño ir a los mercados de aquí. Soy de las que planifica sus comidas y me gusta pensar con antelación qué prepararé para la semana. ¡Vamos a ello!

Independence Day and fiestas - Día de la Independencia y las fiestas del pueblo

 This is our first of the firsts.  Our first Independence Day in the village. Every holiday (think expansively here, religious holidays, civic ones, etc.) is big in Oaxaca.  No matter how small the village, these are multiday celebrations involving fireworks, food, music, parades (sometimes multiple ones), road closures for said parades, and more.  

This holiday involved two parades, one the evening of September 15, and another the morning of September 16, that involved primarily school children.  Here are some photos of that morning parade.  Adorable. 

The evening parade involved free pozole (delicious pork stew with hominy) and coffee for everyone!  No photos taken.  

October we will have Day of the Dead celebrations, November is the Saint Andrew’s Saint Day (which is the biggest celebration I am told), then Christmas.  Every month there is at least one fiesta.  For residents of the municipality there is a 300-400 peso “tax,” that we pay.  

Now that we live in the center of the village, a short walk away from the celebrations, we can stroll over to enjoy.   However we learned this year that we get a spectacular view of the fireworks from the guest bedroom window.  Sweet.

Pueblo life.

Este es nuestro primero de los primeros. Nuestro primer Día de la Independencia en el pueblo. Todas las festividades (aquí hay que pensar en las más amplias: religiosas, cívicas, etc.) son importantes en Oaxaca. No importa lo pequeño que sea el pueblo, estas son celebraciones de varios días que incluyen fuegos artificiales, comida, música, desfiles (a veces varios), cierres de caminos para dichos desfiles y más.

Esta fiesta incluyó dos desfiles, uno la noche del 15 de septiembre y otro la mañana del 16 de septiembre, en los que participaron principalmente niños de la escuela. Aquí hay algunas fotos del desfile matutino. ¡Qué adorable! El desfile de la noche incluyó pozole (un delicioso guiso de cerdo con maíz) y café gratis para todos. No se tomaron fotos.

En octubre celebramos el Día de Muertos, en noviembre es el Día de San Andrés (que, según me han dicho, es la celebración más grande), y luego Navidad. Cada mes hay al menos una fiesta. Los residentes del municipio pagan un impuesto de 300 a 400 pesos por cada fiesta.

Ahora que vivimos en el centro del pueblo, a un paso de las celebraciones, podemos dar un paseo para disfrutar. Sin embargo, este año descubrimos que tenemos una vista espectacular de los fuegos artificiales desde la ventana de la habitación de invitados. ¡Qué chido!

Today our counter is sealed up, after being buffed.   Take a look at the start and finish. How beautiful. 

We are also looking at putting an edging of rocks along the brick walkway.  This was Fede’s idea and his handiwork.  We both like the mix of rock sizes and colors.  That sweet puppy is a neighbor who likes to come and visit, unannounced.

También estamos pensando en poner un borde de piedras a lo largo del camino de ladrillo. Fue idea de Fede y su trabajo. A ambos nos gusta la mezcla de tamaños y colores de las piedras. Ese perrito tan mono es un vecino al que le gusta venir de visita sin avisar.

News from the house - kitchen?? Noticias de la casa - cocina??

Three months after moving in, and the kitchen still isn’t finished.  The countertops aren’t sealed, which means I am reluctant to cook on them.  The oven hasn’t been built in yet.  We are reluctant to cook, since a bit of food or oil can fall in the gaps and be impossible to clean.  No refrigerator installed yet.  One of the upper cabinets has been installed, and it looks great.  The other cabinets are coming.  We REALLY want to be able to cook and store food in our kitchen!  

Our exterior doors aren’t finished yet, which means that mosquitos and flies are also living indoors with us.  Here's Sorpresa enjoying the wide open dog door. Some big bugs can come in that door.

When it rains, this is what our upstairs door to the terrace looks like, see the video above, taken during a thunderstorm. 

My friend Claire brought us a bug light that I ordered on Amazon when they visited a few months ago.  It’s been a help, but not a solution.  

The fencing around the property is getting finished up, and here’s the front gate and Sorpresa.  It looks fantastic!

I am busy learning about window treatments, prioritizing with Federico which windows get tackled first.  Here's a design I like. Thoughts??

I also sourced some lovely outdoor lamps for our front gate and exterior of the house.  These lamps are made in Guadalajara.  I saw them at a lovely eco-friendly hotel in the centro.  Using my librarian research superpowers on a daily basis.  

Tres meses después de mudarnos, la cocina aún no está terminada. Las encimeras no están selladas, así que me da miedo cocinar en ellas. La estufa aún no está empotrada. Nos da miedo cocinar, ya que un poco de comida o aceite puede caer en los huecos y ser imposible de limpiar. Aún no hay refrigerador instalado. Uno de los muebles superiores ya está instalado y se ve genial. Los demás muebles están en camino. ¡Tenemos muchísimas ganas de poder cocinar y guardar comida en la cocina!

Nuestras puertas exteriores aún no están terminadas, lo que significa que los mosquitos y las moscas también viven dentro con nosotros. Cuando llueve, así se ve la puerta de arriba que da a la terraza. Mi amige Claire nos trajo una lámpara antimosquitos que pedí por Amazon cuando nos visitó hace unos meses. Ha sido una ayuda, pero no una solución.

La cerca que rodea la propiedad se está terminando, y aquí está la puerta principal y Sorpresa.

Estoy ocupada aprendiendo sobre cortinas, priorizando con Federico qué ventanas se arreglan primero. También conseguí unas preciosas lámparas de exterior para la puerta principal y el exterior de la casa. Estas lámparas están hechas en Guadalajara. Las vi en un encantador hotel ecológico del centro. Uso mis superpoderes de investigación de bibliotecaria a diario.

 There’s so much happening at the house right now, here are updates.

We are working on getting an automated front door camera installed, so that we’ll have a small camera mounted on a wall next to the kitchen.  It will allow us to hear and see who’s at the front door. We’ll be able to press a button to allow the door to open.  This will be very handy, as the house is set back quite a distance from the front gate.  This will be especially handy in the rainy season or at night.

The last of the tile roof is getting installed.  Here’s a video of Mateo and Carlos working on the roof.  

The back patio is where we hang our clothes, access the laundry room and shed.  It has a drainage problem.  During the rainy season (which is right now), rain water from the terrace and utility roofs accumulates in this patio.  So we are going to have a drainage pipe that directs all this water to the street.   With these pipes, planting some plants, and putting down a brick path, this area should stop being a muddy mess.  The trench is being dug right now.  Here are some photos of that work today.  

Hay muchas cosas sucediendo en la casa ahora mismo, aquí tienes las novedades.

Estamos trabajando en la instalación de una cámara automatizada o video portero en la puerta peatonal. Tendremos una pequeña cámara montada en la pared junto a la cocina. Nos permitirá oír y ver quién está en la puerta. Podremos pulsar un botón para abrir la puerta. Esto será muy práctico, ya que la casa está bastante alejada del portón. Será especialmente práctico en época de lluvias o de noche.

Estamos instalando lo último del techo de tejas. Aquí hay un vídeo de Mateo y Carlos trabajando en el tejado.

El patio de servicio es donde colgamos la ropa, accedemos al cuarto de servicio y la bodega. Tiene un problema de drenaje. Durante la época de lluvias (que es ahora mismo), el agua de lluvia de la terraza y los tejados de los servicios se acumula en este patio. Así que vamos a instalar una tubería de drenaje que dirigirá toda esta agua a la calle. Con estas tuberías, plantando algunas plantas y construyendo un camino de ladrillos, esta zona debería dejar de ser llena de lodo. La zanja se está cavando ahora mismo.
