Day of the Dead in San Andres Huayapam - Dia de los Muertos en San Andres Huayapam

 This is our first Day of the Dead living in the village.  It is the most important and beautiful holiday here (and there are a lot of holidays, if you include the many saint days).  

The municipal government’s fiesta committee puts these celebrations together, and the kick off is the lighting of the marigold path in front of the church.  There was a youth band playing and a speech by a village elder about a historical event.  

It was really sweet to stroll down to the plaza to experience this lighting of the path, chat with friends and generally get into the mood of this special time of the year.

This weekend I went with friends to the great Tlacolula market (my favorite place) to buy items for the altar and the house, plus eat yummy barbeque goat and nieves.  It felt like I was getting back into the swing of my life again.  

Este es nuestro primer Día de Muertos viviendo en el pueblo. Es la festividad más importante y hermosa aquí (y hay muchísimas festividades, incluyendo los numerosos días santos).

El comité de fiestas del ayuntamiento organiza estas celebraciones, y el inicio es la iluminación del camino de cempasúchil frente a la iglesia. Había una banda juvenil tocando y un anciano del pueblo dio un discurso sobre un evento histórico.

Fue muy lindo caminar hasta la plaza para presenciar la iluminación del camino, charlar con amigos y, en general, sentir el ambiente de esta época tan especial del año.

Este fin de semana fui con amigos al gran mercado de Tlacolula (mi lugar favorito) a comprar cosas para el altar y la casa, además de comer un delicioso chivo asado con nieves. Sentí que estaba volviendo a la normalidad.

One thing about this project, and I imagine any construction project is that things emerge as you go along.  One thing that emerged is how much water goes from the roof into our patio de servicio (the service patio where laundry is hung, etc.), and how muddy it becomes very quickly. 

So we decided to install a drainage system to direct that water to the street.  We are going to capture a lot of rainwater off our roof, but this section of the roof isn’t a part of that plan.  Honestly during the rainy season there’s so much water and only so much our rainwater cistern can hold.  

So here are some photos of this project.

I love the result.  A usable, clean patio where we can walk, hang up clothes and eventually fill that dirt area with climbing vines and plants galore.  Functional and soon to be beautiful.  

Una cosa sobre este proyecto, y me imagino que cualquier proyecto de construcción, es que las cosas van surgiendo a medida que avanzas. Una cosa que surgió fue la cantidad de agua que entra del techo a nuestro patio de servicio (donde se tiende la ropa, etc.) y lo fangoso que se vuelve rápidamente.

Así que decidimos instalar un sistema de drenaje para dirigir esa agua a la calle. Vamos a captar mucha agua de lluvia del techo, pero esta sección no está en nuestro plan. Honestamente, durante la temporada de lluvias hay muchísima agua y nuestra cisterna solo puede contener una cantidad limitada.

Me encanta el resultado. Un patio limpio y utilizable donde podemos caminar, tender la ropa y, con el tiempo, llenar esa zona de tierra con enredaderas y plantas trepadoras. Funcional y pronto será hermoso.
