Kitchen planning - the heart of the home - Planificación de la cocina: el corazón del hogar

 I really had no idea the level of detail that goes into building a home.  My whole adult life I have rented small apartments or shared a place with friends, then I bought my first home (already built) at the age of 40.  There was nothing to decide about the house, except to buy it.  I have never remodeled either.  So this is all new territory.  

Right now we are in the midst of designing the kitchen.  True librarian that I am, I am immersing myself in articles and honestly YouTube videos.  I have learned about kitchen lighting.  You want layers of light, task lighting strategically placed where work is being done, i.e. the stove, sink and food prep area.  You want ambient light to give overall light to the space.  You can get LED light strips for underneath the upper cabinets and shelves to illuminate the countertops.  There’s Lumens.  There’s Kelvins.  It’s WILD.  Through it all Victor has been right there with me, listening, offering his thoughts, and being responsive to my many ideas.   The main downside of our kitchen is the lack of windows, so lighting is very important.  However with white walls and good lighting, I know this space is going to be warm and bright.  

Oh, I am also learning about kitchen cabinets.  Again, it’s an endless ride through the many options. Ok, less endless when you have a budget to follow.   YouTube and Google have earthed up a lot of good stuff (and some stuff that is not relevant).  The kitchen triangle between the sink, stove and refrigerator.  The very tricky corner cabinet challenge.   Open shelving?  Where to end those upper cabinets?  Again Victor has been amazing, as I lay out my ideas (often on large drawing pads, thank you for being able to draw!).  He listens with great patience to my vision.

Realmente no tenía idea del nivel de detalle que implica construir una casa. Durante toda mi vida adulta, he alquilado pequeños departamentos o he compartido un lugar con amigos, luego compré mi primera casa (ya construida) a la edad de 40 años. No había nada que decidir sobre la casa, excepto comprarla. Tampoco he remodelado nunca. Así que todo esto es territorio nuevo.

En este momento, estamos en medio del diseño de la cocina. Como soy una verdadera bibliotecaria, me estoy sumergiendo en artículos y, honestamente, videos de YouTube. He aprendido sobre la iluminación de la cocina. Quieres capas de luz, iluminación de tareas, ubicada estratégicamente donde se está trabajando, es decir, la estufa, el fregadero y el área de preparación de alimentos. Quieres luz ambiental para dar luz general al espacio. Puedes conseguir tiras de luz LED para debajo de los gabinetes superiores y los estantes para iluminar áreas de trabajo. Hay lúmenes. Hay Kelvins. Es una LOCURA. Durante todo este proceso, Victor ha estado conmigo, escuchando, ofreciendo sus ideas y respondiendo a mis muchas ideas. La principal desventaja de nuestra cocina es la falta de ventanas, por lo que la iluminación es muy importante. Sin embargo, con paredes blancas y buena iluminación, sé que este espacio será cálido y luminoso.

Ah, también estoy aprendiendo sobre los gabinetes de cocina. Una vez más, es un viaje interminable a través de las muchas opciones. Bueno, menos interminable cuando tienes un presupuesto que seguir. YouTube y Google han encontrado muchas cosas buenas (y algunas cosas que no son relevantes). El triángulo de la cocina entre el fregadero, la estufa y el refrigerador. El desafío muy complicado del gabinete de esquina. ¿Estantes abiertos? ¿Dónde terminan esos gabinetes superiores? Una vez más, Victor ha sido increíble, mientras expongo mis ideas (a menudo en grandes hojas de dibujo, ¡gracias por poder dibujar!). Escucha con gran paciencia mi visión.

After our regular meeting with Victor, where we enjoyed pollo asado and then dug into design conversations, we headed over to the house for some work of a different kind.

We took some black tourmaline and smoky quartz crystal chips and buried them through the property and house in key places: the 4 corners of the property, along the fencing, in the middle of various doorways and entrances to most rooms on the first floor.

I love crystals and wear them everyday when I leave the house (plus they occupy a place on my studio’s altar).  As someone who practices reiki and yoga, I am a believer in the importance of nurturing our energy, through cleansing, meditation and reiki.  

For some background, these two powerful crystals offer energetic protection of different types. 

Black tourmaline is an energetic bodyguard, as it absorbs negativity.   It is known as a protective stone that can shield homes and spaces.  “In the same way that it acts as an energetic barrier for your energy field, it creates a barrier between the inside and outside of your home to keep bad vibes out and keep the inside vibrating at the highest frequency. The Black Tourmaline crystal stone is also one of the most powerful minerals for absorbing electromagnetic radiation, which makes it excellent for placing near computers and other electronics.” 

Smoky quartz also helps to remove negative energy, cleansing spaces and humans of unwanted energy.   It’s also wonderful for grounding.

Después de nuestra reunión habitual con Víctor, donde disfrutamos de pollo asado y luego nos sumergimos en conversaciones de diseño, nos dirigimos a la casa para realizar un trabajo de otro tipo.

Tomamos algunos cristales de turmalina negra y cuarzo ahumado y los enterramos en la propiedad y la casa en lugares clave: las 4 esquinas de la propiedad, a lo largo de la varda, en el medio de varias puertas y entradas a la mayoría de las habitaciones del primer piso.

Me encantan los cristales y los uso todos los días cuando salgo de casa (además, ocupan un lugar en el altar de mi estudio). Como alguien que practica reiki y yoga, creo en la importancia de nutrir nuestra energía, a través de la limpieza, la meditación y el reiki.

Para dar un poco de contexto, estos dos poderosos cristales ofrecen protección energética de diferentes tipos.

La turmalina negra es un guardaespaldas energético, ya que absorbe la negatividad.
