Taking shape with some chalk

On a windy February afternoon we had a chance to mark out the space of our home on the land with chalk with Victor.  It was so much more tangible for me to see the chalk on the ground, the size of the house, the position on the land..the wind blowing, the mountains and blue sky.   

En una ventosa tarde de febrero tuvimos la oportunidad de marcar con tiza el espacio de nuestra casa

en el terreno con Víctor. Fue mucho más tangible para mí ver la tiza en el suelo, el tamaño de la casa,

la posición en el terreno... el viento que soplaba, las montañas y el cielo azul.

Adobe making

We had the chance to break bread with Victor's lovely family one afternoon, then watch the adobes being made.  Here's a video that captures some of that work.

The architects

The journey to find an architect has been a very informative one, full of learning every step of the way.  It has taken time, which is not something that comes naturally to me, someone who grew up in the United States, where doing things quickly is prized. 

We are blessed to be working with an Oaxacan architect Victor Santiago Juarez, a third generation adobe maker and architect from Macuilxochitl.   His father and grandfather were adobe makers, he and his son are architects and adobe makers. 

They are in front of the adobes being made for our home.  

El viaje para encontrar un arquitecto ha sido muy informativo, lleno de aprendizaje en cada paso del camino.   Hemos tomado nuestro tiempo, que no es algo natural para mí, alguien que creció en Estados Unidos, donde se valora hacer las cosas rápido.

Tenemos la suerte de trabajar con el arquitecto zapoteco Víctor Santiago Juárez, un fabricante de adobe de tercera generación y arquitecto de Macuilxochitl.   Su padre y abuelo hacían adobes, él y su hijo son arquitectos.

Están frente a los adobes que se están haciendo para nuestra casa.
