7 top reasons why I love Huayapam - 7 razones principales por las que me encanta Huayapam

1. The pace and quality of pueblo life.  It is a radical departure from the big city life I have lived in the United States. Seeing friends as you stroll.

2. The mountains. Photo below of Sorpresa and the view on our morning walk.

3. The beautiful plaza and church. See the photo below of the church during Palm Sunday.

4. Tejate - a refreshing ancient drink made of corn, cacao, semilla de zapote, flor de rosital.  You can find it sold on almost every street corner, especially on the weekend.  See the photo of a woman making tejate at the annual Tejate Festival in our village. The scent of rosital flowers being toasted on the comal or griddle in the morning is the most divine perfume.

6. It’s a short taxi or bus ride to the centro (if there’s no blockade or march).  There’s good public transportation.  There’s a bus that goes from the center of the village to downtown, and there’s another bus line that goes from the edge of the village to downtown, plus there are colectivos/collective taxis.  A private tax ride is pretty affordable, if you want to skip public transportation. 

7. This pueblo is known for its abundant water that comes from springs in the local watershed.   With climate change, this is changing.  I hear the elders of the village talk about how the rivers and creeks used to run with water all year round.  Now they are mostly dry, except when we have heavy rains.  Having said that, we have more access to water than many parts of the Valley of Oaxaca.

4. Tejate: una bebida refrescante y ancestral hecha de maíz, cacao, semilla de zapote y flor de rosital. Se vende en casi todas las esquinas, especialmente los fines de semana.

5. ¡Aquí encontramos a nuestra perrita Sorpresa! Aroma de la flor de rosital tostando es divina.

6. El centro está a un corto trayecto en taxi o autobús (si no hay bloqueo ni marcha). Hay buen transporte público. Hay un autobús que va del centro del pueblo al centro, y otra línea de autobús que va de las afueras al centro, además de colectivos. Un viaje privado con taxi es bastante asequible si quieres evitar el transporte público.

7. Este pueblo es conocido por su abundante agua, que proviene de manantiales en la cuenca local. Con el cambio climático, esto está cambiando. Escucho a los ancianos del pueblo hablar de cómo los ríos y arroyos solían tener agua todo el año. Ahora están casi secos, excepto cuando llueve mucho. Dicho esto, tenemos más acceso al agua que en muchas partes del Valle de Oaxaca.
