We are now in the phase of scoping out appliances and other items for the house. In a new country (and living in a furnished rental), we have a lot to learn about stores and shopping. Honestly I am pretty solid at buying handmade crafts. Want to buy black clay? A rebozo? Earrings? Mole or chocolate. I got you. The best place to buy a stove? I am learning! So far, we visited Home Depot (yes, there’s one here!), and physically it’s very much like the stores at home. Some merchandise is the same, and some isn’t. I’ve gone online to comparison shop at Liverpool and Sam’s Club (yes, there’s one of those too). These are the stores that have been recommended for a good selection of quality merchandise.
A few days ago I went to a tile store in our old neighborhood in the centro of Oaxaca (Trinidad de las Huertas is the name of the barrio). Unlike these box department stores, this relatively small shop was delightfully full of tiles, talavera sinks, hand blown lamps, etc. I took many photos of the tiles I liked, which I envision for a kitchen backsplash and maybe some other accents. Below you can see my favorites, right next to the floor tiles that we choose. Nifty. Which do you like?
Ahora estamos en la fase de búsqueda de electrodomésticos y otros elementos para la casa. En un país nuevo (y viviendo en un alquiler amueblado), tenemos mucho que aprender sobre tiendas y compras. Sinceramente, soy bastante sólido comprando artesanías hechas a mano. ¿Quieres comprar barro negro? ¿Un rebozo? ¿Aretes? Mole o chocolate. Sale y vamos. ¿El mejor lugar para comprar una estufa? ¡Estoy aprendiendo! Hasta ahora, visitamos Home Depot (¡sí, hay uno aquí!), y físicamente se parece mucho a las tiendas de casa. Algunas mercancías son iguales y otras no. Me conecté a Internet para comparar precios en Liverpool y Sam's Club (sí, también hay uno de esos). Estas son las tiendas recomendadas para tener una buena selección de productos de calidad.
Hace unos días fui a una tienda de azulejos en nuestro antiguo barrio en el centro de Oaxaca (Trinidad de las Huertas es el nombre del barrio). A diferencia de estos grandes almacenes, esta tienda relativamente pequeña estaba deliciosamente llena de azulejos, lavabos de talavera, lámparas sopladas a mano, etc. Tomé muchas fotos de los azulejos que me gustaron, que imagino para el protector contra salpicaduras de la cocina y tal vez algunos otros detalles. Abajo se mira el azulejo del piso junto con el azulejo para la cocina....chido, no?

I am so excited about the terrace. The view of the mountains and eventually our lovely garden. It will be covered mostly, so we can have meals, practice yoga or hula hooping and hang out on a hammock.

The severe drought and resulting water crisis is featured in this press recap here. Currently there is a forest fire up in the mountains of our village, so local volunteers are there fighting the fire. Tonight Federico went up with his friends to volunteer. It seems to get under control and then not on a daily basis.
In the United States firefighting is professional, with trained crews that go into forests with helicopters and other equipment. Here is mainly a volunteer effort of residents with some state support.
Un resumen de la prensa sobre el crisis de agua esta aqui. Actualmente hay un fuego forestal en las montanas del pueblo, con voluntarios luchando contra el incendio. Hoy Federico fue con sus amigos al cerro. A veces esta debajo control y luego no.
En el EEUU el trabajo de los bomberos es profesional, con equipos capacitados que entran en los bosques con helicopteros y otro equipo. Aqui es mayormente un trabajo de voluntarios con apoyo del gobierno estatal.

While I haven’t posted in a few weeks, there’s lots going on at the house. So let’s get to it!
The roof of the second floor is now up. The next stage of the roofing will be the tejas or clay roof tiles and wood beams that are traditional and beautiful.
Federico has been working on getting an extension of the building permit, which has required multiple visits to the municipal office, lots of waiting in lines, new paperwork, and some new fees for our cisterns or water tanks. A new wrinkle is that our village charges us a fee for a rain catchment water tank, while other towns don’t, because it’s an advantage to the town when residents harvest rainwater. Sigh.
Yesterday we went to visit the house with Victor to talk about different details, especially on the second floor. We talked about bathroom design, door placement, the stairs to the roof where the tinaco or roof water storage is located, adding a large window to the interior staircase to see the mountains and add more light. Details, details!
Federico and I also went to Home Depot for the first time to scope out appliances and other items like kitchen sinks, etc. More shopping trips are planned for looking at tile and appliance pricing at other stores, namely Sam’s Club and Liverpool.

On a different note, our pueblo is dealing with a forest fire up in the mountains. Huayapam is at the base of a beautiful mountain range, and with the drought and winds, fires are prevalent all over the state of Oaxaca right now. Federico went up last night to help out. Firefighting here is very much a volunteer effort. The fire is under control, thank goodness! I am attaching a landscape of these very mountains that I am working on right now. Oaxaca is full of inspiration for my art.
Si bien no he publicado en algunas semanas, están sucediendo muchas cosas en la casa. ¡Vamos por ello!
El techo del segundo piso ya está levantado. La siguiente etapa del techado serán las tejas de barro y vigas de madera que son tradicionales y hermosas.
Federico ha estado trabajando para obtener una extensión del permiso de construcción, lo que ha requerido múltiples visitas a la oficina municipal, muchas filas de espera, nuevos trámites y algunas tarifas nuevas para nuestras cisternas o tanques de agua. Una novedad es que nuestro pueblo nos cobra una tarifa por una cisterna de agua pluvial, mientras que otros pueblos no lo hacen, porque es una ventaja para el pueblo que los residentes cosechan la lluvia. Suspiro.
Ayer fuimos a visitar la casa con Víctor para hablar de diferentes detalles, sobre todo del segundo piso. Hablamos del diseño del baño, la colocación de las puertas, las escaleras hasta la azotea donde se ubica el tinaco, agregar un gran ventanal a la escalera interior para ver las montañas y tener más luminosidad. ¡Detalles, detalles!
Federico y yo también fuimos a Home Depot por primera vez para ver electrodomésticos y otros artículos como fregaderos de cocina, etc. Se planean más viajes para ver los precios de azulejos y electrodomésticos en otras tiendas, como Sam's Club y Liverpool.

Por otra parte, nuestro pueblo está luchando con un incendio forestal en las montañas. Huayapam está al pie de una hermosa sierra y, con la sequía y los vientos, los incendios prevalecen en todo el estado de Oaxaca en este momento. Federico subió anoche a ayudar. La extinción de incendios aquí es en gran medida un esfuerzo voluntario. ¡El fuego está bajo control, gracias a Dios! Adjunto un paisaje de estas mismas montañas en que estoy trabajando ahora mismo. Oaxaca está llena de inspiración para mi arte.
Each week brings new activities for the house. We recently went with Victor to visit stores that sell tile, to pick out flooring for the house. We decided on this tile.
On a totally different note, I wanted to share a highlight of Holy Week for me. We had a chance to participate in the Stations of the Cross in the pueblo. It was beautiful, colorful and quite long (3 hours). What also made this special is that we ran into friends throughout the procession. It’s the best part of pueblo life….
Cada semana trae nuevas actividades para la casa. Hace poco fuimos con Víctor a visitar tiendas que venden azulejos, para elegir el piso para la casa. Nos decidimos por este azulejo.
Vamos a tener ladrillo para el corredor. Para aquellos que viven en los Estados Unidos, nuestro corredor no es exactamente lo que conocen o imaginan. Realmente es una extensión del espacio habitable, y donde comeremos muchas comidas, tomaremos una siesta en una hamaca, etc. Para el suelo del corredor vamos con ladrillo rojo. Me encanta este diseño, que vi en un restaurante del centro.
En una nota totalmente diferente, quiero compartir un momento de la Semana Santa. Tuvimos la oportunidad de participar en el Vía Crucis en el pueblo. Fue hermoso, colorido y bastante largo (3 horas). Lo que también hizo especial es que nos encontramos con amigos durante toda la procesión. Es la mejor parte de la vida del pueblo….
The workers are now placing the adobe and bricks in the second floor rooms. The second floor consists of a small guest room, adjacent bathroom, an area for the tinaco (a water storage device that allows water to flow into the plumbing), and the terrace.
I climbed up the ramp (where the interior staircase will be) to take these photos of the guest room, which has adobe walls, and its bathroom, with brick walls, which are best for rooms where there’s lots of moisture like a bathroom or kitchen.

Yesterday we met with Victor the architect, something we do a few times a month, to check in about various details. We talked about renewing the building permit with the municipal government, and Victor shared that he thinks the house will be done by July! It’s incredibly exciting to think about moving into our home, to gardening, nesting and being in the heart of the pueblo (and not its outskirts).
Los trabajadores ahora están colocando adobe y ladrillos en las habitaciones del segundo piso. El segundo piso consta de una pequeña habitación para invitados, un baño adyacente, un área para el tinaco y la terraza.
Subí por la rampa (donde estará la escalera interior) para tomar estas fotos del cuarto de huéspedes, que tiene paredes de adobe, y su baño, con paredes de ladrillo, que son mejores para habitaciones donde hay mucha humedad como el baño o la cocina.
Ayer nos reunimos con el arquitecto Víctor, algo que hacemos un par de veces al mes, para platicar de varios detalles. Hablamos sobre renovar el permiso de construcción con el gobierno municipal y Víctor compartió que cree que la casa estará terminada para julio. Es increíblemente emocionante pensar en mudarnos a nuestra casa, crear un jardín, anidar y estar en el corazón del pueblo (y no en una colonia).
